It is true that you can apply mindfulness to all parts of your life. This includes aging too. It has already been proven that when you practice mindfulness, you are less likely to be affected by anxiety, stress, and depression.

Adopting a mindful point of view regarding aging allows you to live a life which is full of joy and authenticity. It also ensures that you make the most out of your old age years. But, how can you actually achieve this?

1.   Accept What You Can’t Change

One thing that is common with all people who are in their later years is that these years bring with them some truths that aren’t pleasant. It is in your later years that you will start losing people you love. It is also in your later years that you realize that life is not infinite.

Many people result in resisting the fact that they will age in order to try and avoid these simple truths. However, resisting the fact that you will age someday won’t change any one of these simple realities.

The fear of what is not yet known tends to keep men and women from aging mindfully. Every time when you are thinking about what will happen next, you deny yourself the chance to enjoy the moment that you already have right now.

This is not beneficial to you. It is therefore essential to stop focusing on whatever you cannot control and start focusing on what you can control. This will keep you from overthinking about things that you don’t have the ability to change. If you find that you can’t actually stop obsessing about things which aren’t beneficial, you can try doing something that will distract you. A good example of an activity that you can do in order to keep away non-beneficial thoughts is meditation.

2.   Start Respecting Your Body

If you are going to age mindfully, your body has to remain healthy. Not taking care of yourself will hurt your later years since you will have to deal with multiple complications in your old age.

If you haven’t been exercising lately, start making exercise a part of your routine. Just moving your body and making sure that you sweat gives you numerous advantages. It will strengthen your bones and hence help you in avoiding Osteoporosis. Exercise will keep you in shape. Shedding the extra weight will significantly reduce your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Smoking and drinking while with friends may seem like a lot of fun to you. But, if you are looking to age mindfully, these two habits have got to go. This is because they raise the risk of you contracting a large number of lifestyle diseases.

Start being careful with what you eat. Make sure that everything you put in your mouth will benefit your body.

3.   Create a Vision for The Life You Want

How do you want to spend the remaining time you have? You can’t really take full advantage of your time if you don’t know what you want.

Go and sit down somewhere quiet and start thinking about what you would like to achieve and you still haven’t achieved. Ask yourself questions which may help you in coming up with ideas. For example, you can ask yourself the following questions:

  • If there was nothing limiting you, what would you want to do with your life?
  • How can you improve your life?

The answers that you give to these questions will give you a clear picture of what you want your remaining years to look like. You don’t have to conform to the society’s expectations. Just focus on what makes you happy and leave out everything else.

4.   Let Go

Sometimes, you may find yourself clinging to things that don’t really benefit you. Letting go of all these things will clear your mind and give you space to start focusing on what will benefit your life instead.

Acknowledge that what happened did happen. If you didn’t like how it happened, look into it and see whether it is possible to change it. If it is possible, change it and forget about it. If you can’t, forget about it too. What happened in the past stays in the past.

5.   Start Socializing

In most cases, in your later years, you might find yourself being alone. Maybe your kids grew up and left home and you don’t go to work like you used to.

This is a major reason as to why should start meeting new people. Form new friendships and get involved in romantic relationships.

Being alone can cause you a lot of anxiety and stress. If you don’t take care of these, you might end up being depressed. It is impossible to age mindfully when you are depressed.

6.   Change Your Mindset

Many people who are above the age of 50 years will have the mentality that all their remaining years will be filled with pain and anguish. This is the wrong mindset.

Instead of seeing your later years as a chance to enjoy your life, you will see it as the years when your life starts falling apart. Instead of focusing on the positives, you will find yourself focusing on the negatives.

Changing your mindset and seeing your remaining years as a chance to do what you have always wanted to do will allow you to age mindfully.

Aging mindfully is not hard as you think. In fact, it is as simple as making a decision and making the commitment to adhere to that decision. If you are already tired of going through your elderly years while being stressed out day after day, you should turn your life around today by practicing mindful aging.
