The old saying “mind over matter” holds a lot of meaning today.

In a world filled with negativity, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and discouraged in day-to-day life. But, countless studies have shown that positive thinking truly can have a positive effect on how you feel. It’s really a no-brainer: when you think positive thoughts, you are going to put yourself in a positive state of mind where you are more apt to see things in a better perspective.

Perspective Matters

Perspective really does have a major influence over how things make you feel, so thinking positive thoughts can help truly brighten your whole world. The key is to catch yourself when you aren’t thinking positive thoughts and make a conscious effort to turn things around. For instance, next time you find yourself complaining about your morning commute, how about thinking about how great the weather is or some other positive thing that you can glean from the situation?

Have a Positive Focus

When you choose to focus on the good things over the bad things, you’ll suddenly begin seeing a lot more good in the world, and you’ll feel a lot better for it. That’s why positive thinking is kind of a cycle–just as negative thinking is a cycle. That is, the more positive things you think, the more positive things you see, and so the even more positive thoughts you think. Of course, it also goes the other way, with people who think about the negative tending to focus on the negative, and therefore having more negative things to think about.

Tips to Get Out of a Negative Mindset

The difficult thing is pulling yourself out of the negativity cycle if you find yourself trapped in it. It takes willpower and persistency, but it can be done, and you’ll be a better and happier person because of it. If you need help, follow these tips:

  • Catch yourself when you think negative thoughts and try to find something positive to think about instead.
  • Make an effort to recognize positive things when you would otherwise pay no mind to a situation, like when your commute was quick and easy with no delays.
  • Verbalize your positivity and spread it with others, especially when you have the chance to praise and compliment the positivity in other people’s lives.

It’s not always easy, but being happy is a choice, and thinking positive thoughts is the first step to making the right decision.
