If you’re trying to make change, it may feel like going to a foreign country. If you’ve been operating a specific way for a long period of time, it won’t be easy doing things in a whole new way. That’s ok! When people travel to a new country, one of the things they do is watch and learn. Paying attention to what others are doing is a great way to learn the ropes and start to get the hang of it. It’s the same with creating new micro habits.

Do Your Research Before You Begin

Making changes doesn’t always come naturally. Sometimes you need a guide. Doing research before you begin can help you identify what micro habit makes the most sense for your needs. Thanks to the world wide web, there’s more information at your fingertips now than any time in history. Do research and determine what others have done to get the results you’re after. There’s bound to be someone relatable that you resonate with.

Ask a Friend How They Did It

If you know someone who’s crushing it, ask them for advice. Adopting micro habits that work for someone else can save you time and energy. It’s ok to copy what someone else is doing and make modifications as you go. Most people are happy to share tips and tricks that work for them, don’t be afraid to ask for ideas.

Use the Buddy System

If you are trying to make positive changes, it always helps to have like-minded people around you. Consider getting a buddy to join in. You can motivate one another, share resources and ideas, and offer support. Something as simple as drinking the daily recommended ounces of water is easier when you have a friend to lean on.

Try, Try, and Try Again

While borrowing a micro habit from someone else can help shift your mindset and behavior, it may not be a custom fit. You are unique and your situations, needs, and expectations may differ slightly from someone else. Be prepared to make micro adjustments to your micro habits until they work best. Once you have a handle on things, they won’t seem so strange and different.

If you’re trying to make change, it may not feel easy or natural in the beginning. There’s no reason to reinvent the wheel. Adopt, borrow, or downright copycat someone else’s successful micro habits on the way to developing your own.
